I first got into aromatherapy in December 2019 after my mother bought me a diffuser, along with a starter set of essential oils. Aromatherapy wasn’t entirely new to me, but as a candle addict, I was excited about the new possibilities.
I’ve been curious about holistic treatments and want to learn more. It’s taken me six months but I’m finally getting time to research some of the more alternative treatments for mental, physical and emotional health.
What is Aromatherapy?
Some people better understand aromatherapy as being all about different smells which, in turn, can relieve stress and anxiety. You wouldn’t be wrong, but there is so much more to it than just that.
Aromatherapy embodies a holistic approach to wellbeing. It uses essential oils and ‘smells‘ in a variety of different ways in order to benefit the person as a whole rather than targeting specific symptoms. Commonly, essential oils are used to soothe mental, physical or emotional distress. Unlike conventual medicine, aromatherapy doesn’t work to mask the pain. Instead, it treats the overall wellbeing of a person so that they are better equipped to deal with issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

Methods of diffusing?
AD|| Scented Candles by What’s In My Wonderland;
I’m a candle addict, so when Ge asked for testers of her products I jumped at the opportunity! Nothing is better than getting up in the morning, throwing on a pot of coffee and lighting up a candle, or switching on the diffuser. I just love to fill my home with pleasant smells!
All of Ge’s candles are handmade, 100% Vegan and made from recyclable materials. As a small business, Ge aims to be as eco-friendly as possible which I personally think is very noble. The more that businesses (big and small) do for the environment, the better.
The candle I received was poured into a small mason jar, giving a beautifully rustic effect which happens to fit my living room to a T. Within the package from Ge I also received a selection of scented wax melts of various scents.

Diffusers;
As mentioned my mother got me a diffuser for Christmas ’18. Since then I’ve used it at least 3 times a week while working in my office. The great thing about this diffuser is that it not only emits the scent very well, but it’s also a clock, a blue tooth speaker and it lights up! Everything you could want in one, neat little package.
It’s from Art Naturals which also happens to be where I get the bulk of my scents from. They not only sell the scented oils and diffusers, but also oil-infused skincare, bath and body wash, and hair care.
Check out the diffuser here for under £30!

Essential oils can used a variety of other ways;
- Bathing, during massages
- In spray bottles
- Skin and hair products.
Essential Oils For…
Want to get started with aromatherapy? Don’t know where to begin? This list outlines only a few of many essential oils out there and their uses.
Oils for Focus;
Lemon is ideal for mental fatigue due to it’s sharp, citrus aroma, and when used this scent often leaves you feeling refreshed.
Peppermint has a strong menthol aroma. It’s refreshing and often helps clear the mind and chest.
Rosemary has a rich, herbal aroma. It’s been widely reported to have a positive impact on our cognitive function. Not to mention it’s perfect for warding off evil spirits.
Oils for Relaxation & stress relief;
Lavender is one of the most frequently used scents. It’s known for its stress-relieving properties and is often associated with sleep. Lavender has the ability to connect with many emotions and is excellent at helping to restore our minds and bodies.
Oils for Mood;
Orange is extracted from orange peels and has a very refreshing scent. It’s excellent for energising you and uplifting your spirits should you feel ‘under the weather.‘
Ylang ylang is a scent I’ve only tried once and is known for its floral aroma. It helps in making you feel uplifted and promotes total body wellness.
Please note: Aromatherapy isn’t a cure and should not be used in lieu of therapy or medication. It should always be used in conjunction with other treatment plans.
